MTU organises Conference in Kathmandu
Migrant Trade Union (MTU) which is affiliated with Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has organised a Conference in Kathmandu at June 12-14, 2008. The Conference concluded with a Press Conference organised today at GEFONT HQ in Kathmandu.
"We, former ETUMB (Equality Trade Union Migrant Branch) and MTU Ex-officers and current MTU officers, have gathered in Kathmandu Nepal from June 12-14, to demonstrate that targeted crackdown cannot stop us from fighting for the rights of migrant workers in South Korea and around the world" the press statement reads.
The Conference identifying as the "International Conference", which aims to Networking between the workers of countries of origin and Migrant Workers in South Korea. The participants discussed different aspects to protect the migrant workers rights in Nepal, Bangladesh and other labour sending countries. The conference draws following recommendations:
-agree to establish the International Migrant Workers Solidarity Network (IMWSN) for the purpose of regular systematic communication and joint action between Nepal, Bangladesh and South Korea with the prospect of expanding to include other countries in the future,
-feel urgency of pre-departure education and training for workers before s/he migrates to South Korea through the Employment Permit System,
-to organise international events such as International Migrants Day – December 18, to protect the migrant workers right,
-agree to form an organization for returned ETUMB and MTU members to strength the communication and mobilisation in Bangladesh and other countries
- agree to support and strengthen the GEFONT Migrants' committee and encourage to organise return migrants widely in Nepal,
-reaffirm the symbolic meaning of MTU as a union formed by and for migrant workers regardless of visa status, and committed ourselves to work necessary to win MTU's legal recognition, and
-agree to protest in front of the South Korean embassy in different countries to make known our demands directly to the South Korean government
The migrant workers movement in South Korea was created through the efforts of the Equality Trade Union Migrants Branch, the Myeongdong Cathedral Sit-in Protest and the Seoul-Gyeonggi-Incheon Migrants Trade Union. For the purpose numbers of migrant workers forced to return their home since 2002 to till today. The South Korean government is using targeted crackdown against movement leaders.

송출국 노동자와 한국 이주노동자운동의 연대를 위한 국제회의
- 6월 12-14일, 네팔 카트만두에서 열려
- 국제 이주노동자 연대 네트워크 결성 및 각국에서 이주노동자운동 전개하기로
1. 서울경인평등노조 이주지부(ETU-MB)와 서울경인 이주노조(MTU) 활동을 하면서 무수한 조합원, 활동가들이 단속추방 되었습니다. 그동안 단속추방 되고 나면, 그 이후의 활동에 대해서는 추방된 개인에게 맡겨져 있었고 추방된 본국에서의 지속적인 활동에 대해서는 체계적으로 조직되지 못했습니다. 그러나 한국에서 이주운동을 통해 성장한 활동가들이 단속추방으로 운동을 중단하는 것이 아니라 계속 본국에서 운동을 이어가게 하고, 이를 통해 이주노동자운동을 더욱 풍부하게 할 필요성은 계속 제기되어 온 바 있습니다. 이에 본국으로 돌아간 이주노동자 활동가들과 함께 6월 12~14일 네팔에서 포럼을 개최하여 송출국에서의 노동운동방안, 이주노조 등 한국운동과 연계 방안, 네트워크 형성 등에 대해서 논의하였습니다. 이는 이주노동자운동 역사에서 최초로 시도된 것으로서, 이후 이주노동자운동을 포함하여 노동운동 전체의 발전에 기여할 수 있는 중요한 계기였습니다.
2. "International Conference on Networking between Countries of Origin and Migrant Workers in South Korea"라는 이름으로 네팔 카트만두에서 열린 이번 회의에 방글라데시에서는 비두(평등노조이주지부 전 활동가), 마숨(이주노조 전 사무국장), 소부르(이주노조 전 부위원장), 민뚜(이주노조 전 서울지부부지부장)이 참여하였고, 네팔에서는 까지만(이주노조 전 위원장), 토르너(이주노조 전 위원장), 라주(이주노조 전 부위원장), 샤말(평등노조이주지부 전 활동가, 명동성당 농성투쟁단장), 버즈라(평등노조이주지부 전 활동가), 검(이주노조 전 조합원), 바브람(이주노조 전 조합원) 등이 참여하였습니다. 참가자들은 2박 3일간의 회의를 통해 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였습니다.
▲네팔, 방글라데시, 한국 사이에 정기적이고 체계적인 소통과 공동행동을 위해 국제 이주노동자 연대 네트워크(International Migrant Workers Solidarity Network)결성한다. ▲고용허가제(EPS)로 한국에 들어오는 노동자들에 대해 사전에 각 나라에서 교육하고 선전한다. ▲이주노동자 권리 보장을 위해 12월 18일 세계 이주민의 날 행사와 같은 공동행동을 조직한다. ▲한국에서 이주노동자운동을 하다가 돌아간 이들이 네팔, 방글라데시 등 각 나라에서 그룹을 결성하고 이주노동자운동을 지속한다. ▲비자 여부에 상관없이 이주노동자를 위해 이주노동자에 의해 만들어진 노조로서 이주노조의 의미를 재확인하고 이주노조의 합법화를 위해 필요한 캠페인을 전개한다. ▲한국 정부에 우리의 정확한 요구를 전달하기 위해 각 나라 한국대사관 앞에서 집회를 개최한다. ▲국제회의를 1년에 한 번씩 개최한다.
3. 무엇보다도 이번 회의의 성과는, 한국 정부에 의해 표적단속 당하여 본국으로 강제추방 된 이주노동자운동 활동가들이 처음으로 한 자리에 모여서 그 동안의 상황과 서로의 고민을 공유하면서 새로운 활동을 결의한 것입니다. 한국 뿐 아니라 세계 이주노동자의 권리 쟁취를 위해 나아가기 위해 서로가 서로에게 힘을 준 것입니다. 앞으로 많은 관심과 지지 연대를 부탁드립니다.
