A series of rallies in observance of International Migrants Day were held in Seoul on Thursday. The protesters calling for the government to stop the deportations of illegal foreign workers and to legalize their status in Korea.
About 800 members (!!!ÇÏÇÏ!!!) of the Equality Trade Union-Migrant Branch (ETU-MB) held a memorial ceremony in front of the Jongro Tower to commemorate ¡°foreign migrant workers who died because of government¡¯s deportation policy,¡± arguing that five foreigners committed suicide and two froze to death in the process of the government crackdown.

The protesters argued that although 20 nations have already have ratified the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, the Korean government has yet to do so, They also criticized the government for deporting migrant workers in order to introduce a work-permit system in August next year.

Meanwhile, 102 Korean actors, including Sul Kyung-gu, Song Kwang-ho, Moon So-ri and Yoo Ji-tae, released a statement, saying the government should bring fundamental changes to its policy toward foreign workers, rather than using a stop-gap measures like temporary freezes.
