About 189,600 people, or 83.5 percent of the estimated 227,000 illegal foreign workers in Korea, registered their names with the authorities as of the registration deadline of Oct. 31, the Ministry of Labor said yesterday.
Nearly 91 percent of 162,000 illegal alien workers with less than 3 years stay applied for government work permits that allow for employment of up to two years.
But only 65.2 percent of 65,000 illegal migrant laborers with three to four years stay registered with the government. People in this category must first leave Korea and re-enter if they want to seek additional employment.
Those who stayed longer than four years are not eligible for the government`s registration program and must leave the nation before Nov. 15 in order to avoid deportation.
Workers who do not register will face immediate deportation, ministry officials said.

한국에 있는 불법체류 외국인 노동자는 약 227,000명으로 추산되고 있는데 그 중 83.5퍼센트에 해당하는 189,600여명이 등록 마감일인 10월 31일 현재 당국에 등록을 마쳤다고 어제 노동부가 발표했다.
체류기간이 3년 이하인 불법 외국인 노동자 162,000명 중 약 91퍼센트가 정부에 고용허가를 신청했는데 고용허가를 받으면 2년까지 고용이 허락된다.
하지만 체류기간이 3년에서 4년 사이인 불법 이민자 65,000명 중에서 정부에 등록한 사람은 65.2퍼센트에 불과했다. 여기에 해당하는 사람은 계속해서 고용되기를 원할 경우 먼저 출국한 다음 재입국을 해야 한다.
체류기간이 4년 이상이 사람들은 이번 등록제도의 대상이 되지 않으며 강제출국을 당하지 않으려면 11월 15일 이전에 출국해야 한다.
등록하지 않은 노동자들은 즉시 강제출국을 당하게 된다고 노동부 관리들이 말했다.
